On 2 October 1872, the Saxon Porcelain Manufactory was opened in Potschappel, at the very gates of the city od Dresden. Under its founder, Carl Thieme, working in association with the flower modeller Carl August Kuntzsch, the Manufactory developed into a highly sucessful business enterprise. The company chronicle records the Manufactory's participation in the World's Fair in Chicago in 1893 and in Paris in 1900.
Its markets extended right across Europe and as far as America. The trademarks "S" and "P" standing for "Sächsische Porzellan-Manufaktur Dresden" came into use at the turn of the century and are retained to this day. The Manufactory's collection of over 12,000 models includes figures, vases, dishes, boxes, candle holders, tableware and table decorations. Throughout its history, distinctive forms and decors inspired by the various traditions of European porcelain production have been developed. Among the best known of these are the "Dresden Rose" and the "Dresden Bouquet" which are well loved in all parts of the world.
A small band of highly skilled porcelain craftsmen with close connections to the company among whom are modellers, embossers, firers and painters are dedicated upholders of the company's traditional production methods.
